ACUTE project on Artificial Intelligence in COI: Scope and needs

The ACUTE Project has released its first deliverable, presenting an assessment of needs and requirements to set the project’s scope and guide the responsible use of AI in COI research.

We are pleased to introduce the first publication from the ACUTE Project, an initiative exploring how artificial intelligence can responsibly support COI research. Commissioned by the COI unit of the Austrian Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum and coordinated by ACCORD, ACUTE brings together experts and COI practitioners from several countries to examine the technical and ethical implications of AI in our field.

The primary objective of this ACUTE deliverable is to identify and analyse the relevant needs and requirements of institutions involved in the project and their target groups at the outset of the project. This is essential for clearly defining the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the field of Country of Origin Information (COI). The following thorough assessment aims to identify the most valuable approaches and areas of use of AI in the COI context, as determined by the ACUTE project. This assessment will subsequently inform the creation of customised guidelines for the development and use of AI-supported software, as well as the usage of AI tools.

As AI continues to evolve, shared reflection and collaboration will be essential to understanding its potential and its limits in COI research. Through ACUTE, the project partners aim to contribute to a common approach and help shape practical guidance for the responsible use of AI in this area.

We invite readers interested in COI, AI, and responsible innovation to explore the publication and follow the project’s ongoing work in the years ahead. You can read a project description on ACUTE here.
