The Union Démocratique pour le Progrès Tchadien (UDPT), led by former minister Elie Romba, was one of the 15 political parties that participated in the 1996 presidential election (Political Handbook of the World 1998,174; ARB June 1996, 1226). "Finance minister under Habre and justice minister under Deby, Romba... comes from the southern Logone Oriental region, where rebels loyal to Moise Kette were active against Deby's government" (Reuters 31 May 1996). Although election results for the UDPT are not indicated, it did not participate in the second round of elections, which took place on 3 July 1996 (CIA World Factbook Almanac of Politics and Government 1999).
