Information on student demonstrations at
Edo State University in August 1994 could not be found among the
sources consulted by the DIRB. However, the following information
pertaining to student demonstrations in Edo State in August 1994
may be of interest.
The BBC World Service attachment of 19
August 1994 briefly refers to a riot that began in Benin on 16
August 1994 and was "reportedly led by students of the University
of Benin.
On 18 August 1994, Radio Nigeria Network
reported the closure of the University of Benin following
"disturbances" in Edo State the previous day. Students were asked
to vacate the campus (ibid.).
According to the October 1994 Human Rights
Watch/Africa report entitled Nigeria: 'The Dawn of a New Dark
Age,'
since mid-August, a number of students and
others have been killed in Edo state, in reprisal attacks against
violent demonstrations there in August. In addition, a number of
female students have been raped in the attacks (2).
According to Africa Research
Bulletin, a 31 August 1994 student demonstration in Edo State
resulted in violent clashes with security forces in which
approximately 100 people were allegedly killed (21 Sept. 1994,
11557). The students were demanding the release of Moshood Abiola
(ibid.), "the presumed winner of last year's elections" (AFP 18
Aug. 1994). The Africa No. 1 attachment discuses briefly the
mounting tension "following reprisals taken by security forces
against students of the University of Benin City and the University
of Ekpoma" in Edo State (31 Aug. 1994).
The 25 August 1994 Radio Nigeria attachment
refers to an indefinite number of Edo State students suspected of
being "area boys and hoodlums" who are being interrogated by the
police.
