According to a representative of Middle
East Watch in New York, Iraqi soldiers convicted of treason in 1991
could have been sentenced to life imprisonment or the death penalty
(26 Sept. 1994).
The following information might be useful,
although it does not refer to 1991. The attached Jerusalem
Post article, citing an unidentified Iraqi opposition
newspaper, reports the December 1992 execution of "six senior
members of the [Iraqi] army's general staff, on charges of treason"
(7 Dec. 1992).
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
