Whether individuals affiliated a Trade Workers Centre (Centro de Empleados de Comercio, CEC), either in Mendoza or elsewhere in the country, have been subjected to threats or harassment by state agents (1999-August 2001) [ARG37537.E]

No reports of individuals affiliated with a Trade Workers Centre (Centro de Empleados de Comercio, CEC) being threatened, harassed or detained by police could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

However, the Mendoza CEC, whose headquarters are located at Buenos Aires 133, City of Mendoza (Federación Argentina de Empleados de Comercio y Servicios n.d.; Diario Los Andes 12 July 2001), initiated legal action after union members were allegedly warned by their employers not to participate in a 9 June 2000 general strike (ibid. 10 June 2000; ibid. 11 June 2000). According to a media report quoting Mendoza CEC general secretary Guillermo Pereira (Pereyra), while members employed in the public sector were told that they would lose their wages for the day if they participated in the strike, those employed in private sector workplaces were allegedly threatened with immediate dismissal (ibid.). No additional information on the outcome of the union's lawsuit could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

A representative of the Mendoza CEC contacted by the Research Directorate did not provide information on the treatment of union members by state agents within the time constraints of the Response.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
