BISHKEK -- The former warden of the Kyrgyz prison where nine inmates escaped last month has been found hanged.

Eleonora Sabatarova, spokeswoman of the Kyrgyz state agency that monitors penitentiaries, told RFE/RL that Imankul Teltaev was found hanged in his cell in a pretrial detention center in Bishkek on November 20.

Teltaev was arrested on November 11 after an investigation was launched into the high-profile jailbreak by nine inmates, some of whom had been sentenced for terrorism.

The inmates killed three prison guards during the escape.

Police later located the escapees, killing three of them and arresting six in different locations.

Three of the convicts who were apprehended later died in custody in suspicious circumstances.

One police officer and two civilians were killed during the manhunt to recapture the escapees.
