U.S. Transferring Control Of Afghan Prison

The United States is scheduled on March 25 to formally turn over to Afghanistan’s government control of a military detention center adjacent to Bagram air base.

An agreement on the handover of the Parwan Detention Facility was announced on March 23.

The handover was originally scheduled for March 9 but was postponed when Washington and Kabul could not reach agreement on the handling of inmates viewed as dangerous by U.S. forces.

Since then, reports say the two sides have reached agreement that inmates considered dangerous can remain imprisoned at Parwan in accordance with Afghan law.

The handover of the prison is part of moves to transfer full control of security to Afghan forces in advance of the withdrawal of U.S. and allied combat forces by the end of 2014.
