Country Overview: Bahrain continued efforts to counter Iran’s malign activities in the region. These efforts included aligning sanctions policies, cybersecurity, border security, law enforcement, counternarcotics, and judicial cooperation. Bahrain’s security forces conducted numerous operations to preempt and disrupt attack planning. In March, the United States and Bahrain jointly designated four al-Ashtar Brigades operatives based in Iran. In December, the United States and Bahrain signed the Geospatial Acceleration Initiative to enhance geospatial data sharing for greater maritime security cooperation. Bahrain’s Public Prosecution Office announced that it prosecuted one terrorism case. Bahrain’s Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution Unit made seizures worth $6,101,278 and collected fines worth $8,954,583. In September, Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior and the Public Prosecution Office announced a Bahraini national was extradited to Bahrain for prosecution of terrorism.
Bahrain’s efforts to counter terrorist financing are consistent with previous years. In 2024, the Defense Force maintained elements in Yemen and Saudi Arabia as part of the Saudi-led coalition against Houthi militants and al-Qa’ida. Regionally, Bahrain assumed the Arab League presidency in 2024, hosting the Summit, during which the Bahrain Declaration emphasized the Arab League’s strong stance against terrorism and terrorist financing. The country supported the UN Global Counterterrorism Strategy and the Dushanbe Process and continued its active participation in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. Bahrain also collaborated with the European Union on judicial counterterrorism workshops, earning commendation from the UNSC’s Sanctions Committee.
2024 Terrorism Trends: There were no terrorist attacks reported in Bahrain.
