Kazakh Security Officials Arrest Man They Say Was Plotting 'Terrorist' Attack

The National Security Committee for Kazakhstan says it has arrested a man suspected of plotting a terrorist act in Nur-Sultan, the capital of the Central Asian nation.

"The man is suspected of plotting a terrorist attack in the capital under the influence of the ideology of the international terrorist organization Daesh," the committee said in a statement on March 26.

"During the investigation, an improvised explosive device with destructive elements was seized," it added, giving no further details.

Daesh is an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State extremist group, which is banned in Kazakhstan.
