The incidence of female genital mutilation among the Bagisu tribe [UGA35323.E]

According to a programme officer (PO) at the National Association of Women's Organizations in Uganda (NAWOU) based in Kampala, the Bagisu of Uganda practise male circumcision but not female genital mutilation (FGM) (8 Sept. 2000). The PO stated that only the Sabiny (sometimes called Sebei) of Kapchorwa district practise FGM in Uganda. She further stated that due to the work done by several domestic and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to sensitize local communities in Kapchorwa, the incidence of FGM among the Sabiny had dropped significantly (ibid.).
