Current information on the ill-treatment of Sinhalese who are suspected of supporting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) [LKA15548.E]
Current information on the ill-treatment of Sinhalese who are
suspected of supporting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)
is unavailable to the DIRB. However, a doctoral candidate
specializing in Sri Lankan affairs at Cornell University in Ithaca,
New York, states that there have been linkages between
anti-government Sinhalese groups and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam (LTTE) (19 Nov. 1993). The source adds that in some cases the
Sri Lankan authorities have used alleged LTTE affiliation to
legitimize their arrest of anti-government Sinhalese.
While not directly referring to Sinhalese suspected of affiliation
with the LTTE, the attached article, which provides information on
the arrest of a Sinhalese friend of the assassin of the Sri Lankan
president, might be useful.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible
information currently available to the DIRB within time
constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be,
conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee
status or asylum.
