The Associated Press in a news report from
Amritsar (the Sikh holy city and the centre of the separatist
campaign) on 11 June 1992, quoting senior police superintendent
Jasminder Singh, said 10 gunmen wearing police uniforms took one
Amrik Singh, his wife, three daughters and other villagers into the
fields outside Kilian Wala village, 75 miles from Amritsar, and
shot them. Reuters also in its report of 2 June 1992 from
Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, referred to one Amrik Singh
Kauli as a local chief of the Babbar Khalsa International Group who
was gunned down in an encounter in Chandigarh. BBC report of 23
December 1991, quoting All-India Radio, stated that the two major
factions of the Akali Dal in the Punjab, the Akali Dal-Longowal and
Akali Dal-Panthic, had merged to form a new party. The source said
the announcement was made at a press conference which was attended
by one Captain Kamaljeet Singh.
Reporting from Amritsar on 17 June 1991 the
Chicago Tribune quoted one Amarjit Singh, a senior official
of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, during the final days of what the
Tribune described as the bloodiest general election
campaigns in India's history. Amarjit Singh said that Sikhs "never
forget an insult to our religion, as Mrs. Gandhi found out" (17
June 1991).
A BBC report of 14 May 1991 stated the
death of one Kamaljit Singh, an independent candidate in the
elections to the provincial assembly. According to this report Mr.
Kamaljit Singh was reported missing on 10 May 1991, and his body
was found near Pragpur village on the following day. Finally, the
Xinhua News Service also reported from New Delhi that one Sukhbir
Singh was shot dead by Sikh militants at Doburji village in
Amritsar district.
