Information on whether prisoners at Usher Fort Prison are asked to perform farm work inside or outside of the Fort premises [GHA16152.E]

According to a professor in African politics at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, the prison system in Ghana has a work schedule for prisoners in which they perform work both outside and inside prison premises (19 Jan. 1994). The source stated that the Usher Fort Prison in Accra is basically a prison for politicians and hardened criminals (ibid.). Although the source was unsure whether inmates at Usher Fort Prison are subjected to the daily or weekly work routine of the Ghana prison system, he could not see why this prison could be the exception from the rule (ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
