Information on whether Liberian or Ghanaian passports are checked for the appropriate Canadian or U.S. visa at Madrid airport [ESP18210.E]

According to an Iberia Airlines of Spain official in Montréal, Liberian and Ghanaian passports are checked for the appropriate Canadian or U.S. visa at Madrid airport (1 Sept. 1994). The official indicated that there are three passport controls at Madrid airport. The first control takes place in the luggage registration area where airline personnel examine passports, visas and tickets. The second passport control occurs when Spanish immigration agents stamp the passport for exit (ibid.). The third passport control is performed by the Spanish police at the entrance to the aircraft (ibid.)

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
