The information used in this response was provided by a
representative of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany
(17 May 1991).
1) In general, a person born in another country after 1975 who is
the legitimate child of a female German national is entitled to
German nationality. If such a person was born before 1975, he/she
would be entitled to nationality only if he/she would otherwise be
a stateless person. However, because a number of things have
happened since the World Wars which may influence the determination
of nationality, it is practically impossible to determine without
knowledge of the specifics of the case whether a person born of a
German mother before World War II would be eligible for German
citizenship.
2) There is no information currently available to the IRBDC
specific to whether a person who served in the armed forces of the
Third Reich would be able to obtain German nationality. However,
the official at the embassy stated that, generally, a person who
served in the German armed forces would not automatically be
granted German nationality, however, its acquisition may be easier
for this person.
There is no further information currently available to the IRBDC
on these topics.
