According to an article in West Africa, in mid-January 1993 John Fru Ndi was still under house arrest (18-24 Jan. 1993). A group of old women called "Takembeng" tightened security around Ndi's house following the lifting of the state of emergency in Bamenda (Ibid.). The women intended to ward off any secret police move to eliminate Ndi (Ibid.). According to newspaper reports, the secret police have been instructed to prevent Ndi from attending President Clinton's inauguration ceremony (Ibid.). The women promised to guard Ndi until 5 January (Ibid.).

According to Ndjamena Radiodiffusion Nationale Tchadienne, Ndi did attend President Clinton's inauguration and made a stopover in Paris on the way home (28 Jan. 1993).

On 9 February 1993, Yaounde CRTV Radio Network reported that Ndi had his first press conference since his release from house arrest (7 Feb. 1993).
