On 31 July 2001 an official at the Embassy of China in Ottawa stated that if a person who lost his or her Chinese citizenship as a result of obtaining citizenship in another state wishes to reacquire his or her Chinese citizenship, he or she must first renounce his or her other citizenship. The person must then provide documentary evidence issued by the competent authority in the state of which he or she had been a citizen to the effect that the person is no longer a citizen of that state. The official stated that this procedure is very unusual, and he was unable to state how long it would take. The official added that the application for reacquisition of citizenship must be done through the office of the Ministry of Public Security in the place in China where the person had resided before becoming a citizen of another state
