Sheikh Hasina Wajed's residence in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, was attacked on 10 August 1989. According to news reports, shots were fired and hand grenades and home-made bombs exploded outside the opposition Awami League leader's residence, but no one was injured (FBIS-NES-89-154; FBIS-NES-89-155; Reuters 12 Aug. 1989; Reuters 11 Aug. 1989). The police said the attack was probably aimed at frightening Hasina rather than killing her (Reuters 11 Aug. 1989; Reuters 12 Aug. 1989).

However, Party leaders protested the incident at a rally the next day, as they charged the attack was an attempt to assassinate their leader (FBIS-NES-89-155). Also, angry Awami League supporters set fire to government vehicles and several private cars in the city (Reuters 12 Aug. 1989).

Furthermore, the eight-party opposition alliance, led by Sheikh Hasina, staged a nation-wide strike on 3 September to protest the alleged attempt on their leader's life. The strike paralyzed Dhaka, a city of about five million people, and other cities in the country (Xinhua). According to a Xinhua News Services news report on 3 September 1989, at least five persons were arrested by riot police in central Dhaka (Ibid.). Reuters also reported the death of Mohammead Yusuf, a suporter of the Awami League, on 3 September (Reuters 5 Sept. 1989; Reuters 8 Sept. 1989) and two Awami League students on 5 September 1989 (Reuters 8 Sept. 1989).

Information on the death of a man called Monsur is not available to the IRBDC at the present.
