Information on the above-mentioned
organizations could not be found among the sources currently
available to the IRBDC.
For your information, please find attached
a few documents, one of which reports on student organizations at
San Carlos University (in addition to that already available
through your Regional Documentation Centre). Also attached, please
find an article on the opposition to the Guatemalan government's
proposed Social Pact, which was to be initially debated on 22 March
1991. Specific references to demonstrations on that date could not
be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC.
One of the attached documents states that
the Association of University Students (AEU) activism "encompasses
economic-justice issues" (Barry 1990, 86). Nevertheless, the source
does not indicate whether a particular organization within the AEU
deals with such issues.
The attached document on the rejection of
the government's proposed Social Pact states that four important
unions joined the boycott (Central America Report 5 Apr.
1991). Another source states that at least one of the four unions
may have become the target of threats because of its opposition to
the Social Pact (Guatemala Human Rights Commission 22 Apr.
1991).
A more recent report (May 1991) mentions a
strike at San Carlos University in which "the schools of
engineering and law were the last to join" (Central America
Report 31 May 1991).
Additional and/or corroborating information
could not be found among the sources currently available to the
IRBDC.
