1. Information on the process and procedures to apply for Turkish citizenship under article 7(c) of the Turkish citizenship law, 2. on whether a Bulgarian Turk by ethnicity would automatically granted Turkish citizenship, 3. and on whether Bulgarian Turks who went to Turkey in the summer 1989 obtained Turkish citizenship [TUR22758.E]

In a 16 January 1996 letter sent to the DIRB, the Attaché in Charge of Consular Affairs at the Embassy of Turkey in Ottawa provided the following information:

1) In order to obtain Turkish citizenship, a person must make an application to the Governor of the city or district in Turkey where he is residing. If residing outside Turkey, he or she must apply to the nearest Turkish Consulate.

2) Not automatically. It requires the decision of the Council of Ministers.

3) Yes. Those who have applied have obtained Turkish citizenship.
