A 29 July 1999 NTV emission states:
Seventeen members of this organization [ultranationalist organization UNA-UNSD Ukrainian National Assembly-Ukrainian National Self-Defence] were arrested in Kharkiv Region while in combat training. Sixty-four petrol bombs and sharpened spades were confiscated from them...All the arrested turned out to be Cossacks.
No additional information on nationalist organizations in Ukraine containing Cossacks, nor on the treatment of ethnic minorities by Cossacks, or on the treatment of Cossacks by the state, could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
