The Parliament or Jatiya Sangsad is
a unicameral legislature made up of 300 members who are directly
elected by universal adult suffrage for five-year terms (Kurian
1992, 116). In order to ensure women's representation in
Parliament, 30 women members are elected by other members of the
Jatiya Sangsad (Ibid.).
In the general election of 27 February
1991, the Nationalist Party took 140 seats, Nationalist Awami
League 84, the Jatiya Party 35, Jamaat-i-Islami 18, Communist Party
of Bangladesh 5, Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League 4, Islam
Oikya Jote 1, Ganotantrik Party 1, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Siraj 1,
Workers Party 1, National Awami Party-Muzaffar 1, and Independents
3 (Dhaka Domestic Service 1 Mar. 1991).
