Romania Mare is a weekly magazine
which was launched in Romania on 8 June 1990 (RFE/RL 15 Nov. 1991,
25). This magazine was condemned by the Romanian Ministry of
Culture for its extremist nationalist positions (Romania
Libera 24 July 1991). In spite of this condemnation by the
government, Romania Mare was awarded a prize by the Minister
of Interior in 1991 (RFE/RL 15 Nov. 1991, 26). Four months later,
it was reported that President Iliescu had condemned Romania
Mare for its anti-Semitism (RFE/RL 10 Apr. 1992).
According to H. Zimmerman, former deputy
editor of the Romanian daily Timisoara, Romania Mare
is supported by former Communist organizations such as the
Securitate, the former secret police (Uncaptive Minds Fall
1991). The editor-in-chief of Romania Mare is Vadim Tudor
and the director is Eugen Bardu, both renowned for their links with
the former secret police under the Ceausescu regime (RFE/RL 15 Nov.
1991, 25). In 1991, Romania Mare had an approximative
circulation of 600,000, the largest readership of Romania's
periodicals (RFE/RL 15 Nov. 1991, 26). A political party was
created from the Romania Mare weekly (RFE/RL 15 Nov. 1991,
25). The Greater Romania [Romania Mare] Party (GRP) registered as a
lawful political organization in May 1991 and published its
platform in June 1991. According to Radio Free Europe/Radio
Liberty, the party focuses on traditionalist communitarian values
which emphasize "specificity, separateness, and segregated
solidarity" (15 Nov. 1991, 28). Its membership is estimated at
100,000.
Allegations of an electoral alliance
between the Greater Romania Party, the National Salvation Front
(NSF) and the Party of Romanian National Unity (PRNU) were denied
by Petre Roman of the NSF (RFE/RL 31 Jan. 1992, 23). In the first
round of mayoral elections, held on 9 February 1992, the Greater
Romania Party won less than 0.1 percent of the mayoral offices
(Ibid. 13 Mar. 1992, 26).
