Watchdog Says All Syria's Chemical-Weapons Facilities Destroyed

The international chemical-weapons watchdog says Syria has destroyed all of its declared chemical-weapons production and mixing facilities, meeting a November 1 deadline.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) says in a document obtained by Reuters that it has verified the destruction of all declared production and mixing equipment at Syria's 23 chemical-weapons sites.

It said its team of experts had inspected 21 of the 23 sites.

The other two were too dangerous to inspect, but the chemical-weapons production equipment had reportedly already been moved to other sites that had been inspected.

President Bashar al-Assad's regime agreed to destroy its chemical weapons by mid-2014 after the United States threatened military strikes in the wake of a poison-gas attack that the United States says killed more than 1,400 people in August.
