Information on a student demonstration that
took place in the city of Shenyang on 1 May 1989 is currently
unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa. However, according to a report
from The New York Times, Student demonstrators in the
northeastern cities of Shenyang and Harbin were confined to their
campuses on 4 May 1989, the anniversary of the Beijing nationalist
demonstrations of 1909 which led to the May 4 Movement, an
organization committed to a major re-examination of Chinese society
(5 May 1991). Marches took place in Beijing, Shanghai and in many
other cities thoughout China to commemorate the 70th anniversary of
these events (Ibid.).
