Information on a student demonstration that took place in the city of Shenyang on 1 May 1989 is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa. However, according to a report from The New York Times, Student demonstrators in the northeastern cities of Shenyang and Harbin were confined to their campuses on 4 May 1989, the anniversary of the Beijing nationalist demonstrations of 1909 which led to the May 4 Movement, an organization committed to a major re-examination of Chinese society (5 May 1991). Marches took place in Beijing, Shanghai and in many other cities thoughout China to commemorate the 70th anniversary of these events (Ibid.).
