Government initiatives to address the concerns of the Roma community [HUN30463.E]

Please find attached a report provided by the Hungarian embassy on government initiatives from 1995 to the present to address the concerns of the country's Roma community. It covers the establishment of the Public Foundation for the Roma, the Coordinating Council of Roma Affairs, the Gandhi Public Foundation, which deals with education, and the Fund (later Foundation) for National Ethnic Minorities. The report also looks at housing, employment, education and anti-discrimination initiatives that have been undertaken as part of the medium-term programme (see also Roma in Hungary of March 1998 and HUN30156.EX of 25 September 1998). The latter includes training courses and material for police officers. Several local and regional initiatives are also covered, as is the establishment of a National Roma Information and Cultural Centre in June 1998.

This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
