Information on a demonstration in Tripoli by the Alawi community in response to Ali Eid losing his seat in Parliament [LBN26157.E]

The following information was provided during 22 January 1997 telephone interview with a researcher with the Institut des sciences sociales at the Lebanese University in Beyrouth.

The source stated that there was a demonstration by Ali Eid supporters in Tripoli. The source could not identified the date of the event. The source added that only Ali Eid supporters participated in this demonstration. The source was not aware of any arrests following the demonstration.

The following information was provided during a 22 January 1997 telephone interview with the editor-in-chief of Orient l'Express, a magazine produced in Beyrouth. The magazine is affiliated to the Lebanese newspaper L'Orient-le-jour.

The source was not aware of a demonstration in Tripoli in response to Ali Eid's defeat. The source added that one reason Ali Eid lost his seat in Parliament is that he was no longer useful to Syria.
