Information on the Union of Democratic Djiboutians (UDD), on its members and supporters, and on their treatment by the authorities; and on the impact of the Djibouti government-FRUD agreement on the UDD and the Gadabursi [DJI22829.E]

Information on the UDD is limited among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

According to Political Handbook of the World: 1994-1995, the UDD was founded in January 1992 as a Gadabursi clan party opposed to Djibouti president Hassan Gouled (1994, 239). The UDD was a founding member of the Front Uni de l'Opposition Djiboutienne (FUOD), an alliance of Afar and anti-government Issa clan groups begun in Paris in June 1992 (ibid., 238). The leaders of the UDD are Mahdi Ibrahim God and Mohamed Moussa Ainache (ibid., 239). For additional information on the UDD, please consult the attachments.

Information on the impact on the UDD or the Gadabursi of the peace agreement between the government and the Front pour la Restauration de l'Unité et de la Démocratie (FRUD) could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints.
