No information on the treatment of Christians by Syrians in Dâmoûr, Lebanon, could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
Additional information on the treatment of Christians by the Lebanese and Syrian authorities can be found in LBN39107.E of 11 June 2002.
However, for general information on conflicts between Lebanese Christian anti-Syrians and Lebanese pro-Syrians, please see the Europa World Year Book 2001 and the Europa World Year Book 2002 (2001; 2002).
Many sources have reported on the treatment of Christians in Lebanon (CWN 26 Mar. 2001; ibid. 2003; Xinhua 16 Aug. 2001; The Middle East 1 Apr. 2002; AFP 4 June 2002; The Middle East Times 27 Sept. 2002). For example, the police had summoned on several occasions a person who was a member of a Christian group against Syrian influence in Lebanon (Associated Press 22 May 2002).
Other sources reported that over 200 anti-Syria Christian activists were arrested while participating in anti-Syrian protests (CWN 16 Aug. 2001; ibid. 21 Aug. 2001; ibid. 8 Aug. 2001; Los Angeles Times 9 Aug. 2001; AFP 30 Aug. 2001; ibid. 2 Sept. 2001; ICC Nov. 2002), including journalists, lawyers and engineers (The Washington Post 3 Sept. 2001; CWN 16 Aug. 2001). An article in the Middle East Times also mentions that "[a] military court in Lebanon agreed Tuesday to a defence appeal for a retrial of three anti-Syrian Christian activists jailed for contact with Israel" (16 Apr. 2002).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
