A suicide attacker has killed a cousin of outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the southern province of Kandahar.

Provincial governor spokesman Dawa Khan Menapal told Radio Free Afghanistan that the attacker exploded his suicide vest while meeting Hashmat Karzai in his home in Kandahar's Dand district on July 29 .

Menapal said one civilian was injured in the attack.

He said the bomber came to Hashmat Karzai's house to greet him on the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr.

No one claimed the responsibility of the attack.

Hashmat Karzai led the election campaign of presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani in the province of Kandahar.

Ghani and the other contender, Abdullah Abdullah, are at loggerheads over the June 14 runoff vote, which has been mired in allegations of massive fraud.
