According to Back To Godhead, the magazine of the Hare Krishna movement, the Hare Krishna movement in Bulgaria has been active underground since 1978, but started operating openly in 1989 (Mar.-Apr. 1991, 45). In the past, members of the group suffered harsh treatment and a member even died under mysterious circumstances. The main centres of the movement are Sofia and Plovdiv, and the membership now totals 20 (Ibid.).
