Deadly Violence Rocks Daghestan

April 12, 2013

An explosion near a school in the Daghestani city of Buinaksk has killed at least one policeman and wounded three others in the latest incident during two days of violence in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.

The explosion late on April 12 came after a two-day gun battle in Daghestan's Untsukul district.

The Untsukul fighting started on April 11 when security forces surrounded a group of suspected militants.

Three militants were eventually killed but at least one member of the security forces was wounded when another group launched an assault against them on April 12.

A checkpoint in the area was also attacked on the same day but no casualties were reported.

Daghestan is one of the most volatile republics in the North Caucasus, with violence linked to Islamic extremists and criminal groups.
