August 02, 2012
A policeman has been severely injured in a bombing attack in Russia's volatile republic of Daghestan in the North Caucasus.

Local law enforcement officials say an explosive device detonated in the car of Lieutenant Rustam Magomedov in the city of Buinaksk, tearing off his leg.

Officials say the attack against Magomedov was probably in connection with his professional activities.

The attack took place several hours after another policeman was shot dead by unknown attackers in Daghestan's Kizilyurt district.

An investigation is under way.

Violence between suspected Islamic militants and security forces in Russia's North Caucasus, which includes the republics of Daghestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria, leads to dozens of deaths and injuries each year.
