Russia Lists Organizations Associated With Nonexistent Anti-Russian Separatist Movement As 'Extremist'

Russia's Justice Ministry on July 25 declared 55 organizations registered abroad as "extremist" because of their association with the banned Anti-Russian Separatist Movement, a grouping that doesn't exist. The listed organizations advocate self-determination for ethnic republics and regions within the Russian Federation. One group on the list -- the Free Russia Foundation -- was established by Russian opposition and rights activists in exile. Last year, Russia designated as "undesirable organizations" two movements registered abroad -- the League of Free Nations and the Forum of Post-Russia's Free Peoples, which represent activists of indigenous ethnic groups of Russia's ethnic regions.
