Research Directorate, Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, Ottawa

Samples of police summonses, as obtained from manuals owned by an Associate Director of the Centre for Rights and Justice at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), who was also a research assistant professor at CUHK's Faculty of Law, are available in Response to Information Request CHN104458 of October 2013. English translations of these samples are attached to this Response. The first sample is a "People's Court Summons," described in CHN104458 as a "court-issued subpoena [chuanpiao]" (Attachment 1). The second sample is a "Compelled Appearance Summons," described in CHN104458 as a "coercive summons [juchuan] issued by Public Security Bureaus" (Attachment 2). The third sample is an "Appearance Notice," described in CHN104458 as a "criminal summons [xingshi chuanhuan]" (Attachment 3). The fourth sample is a "Summons for Appearance," described in CHN104458 as a "public security summons [zhi'an chuanhuan]" (Attachment 4).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection.
