Protection available for police informants (1992-2000) [MYS36148.E]

Information on protection available for police informants is scarce among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. The Abduction and Criminal Intimidation of Witnesses Act, 1947 (revised 1977) provides for penalties of ten to fourteen years for persons who intimidate or abduct witnesses thereby "impeding the course of justice." However, the legislation does not contain any provisions regarding positive measures for protecting witnesses, including police informants.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
