In telephone interviews on 17 and 18 April
1996, the director of community services and cultural affairs of
the National Conference on Soviet Jewry in New York (NCSJ) provided
the following information. The NCSJ is a US-based Jewish advocacy
organization that monitors the situation of Jews in the former
Soviet Union.
The director stated that the Jewish
People's University of Dnipropetrovsk is a legitimate, existing
organization, and the director visited Dnipropetrovsk and met with
leaders of the organization in October 1995. The organization's
mandate is to serve the educational needs of the Jewish community
in Dnipropetrovsk, and to this purpose offers a variety of courses,
including ones in Jewish traditions, history and culture. The
organization is several years old. The organization does not have
its own building; courses are conducted in a Jewish day school in
Dnipropetrovsk, and possibly elsewhere.
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
