Information on the security and immigration checks a Sudanese citizen travelling on a Sudanese passport would undergo when flying to Saudi Arabia from the airport at Port Sudan [SDN19745.E]

According to a representative at the embassy of Sudan in Ottawa, persons leaving the country through Port Sudan's airport must undergo a security check (14 Feb. 1995). Such a check should include verification of outstanding warrants or court procedures (ibid.). Persons who have not completed their military service likely would not be allowed to leave the country unless they can demonstrate a compelling reason for doing so; an acceptable reason could include pursuit of studies abroad or a visit to sick relatives (ibid.).

Please find attached several documents that provide information on travel restrictions and controls in Sudan. The attached section of Country Reports 1993 discusses travel requirements, controls and restrictions for Sudanese nationals. The attachment from Egypt & the Sudan: A Travel Survival Kit provides information on air travel in Sudan; although most of this information is relevant to foreigners travelling to, from and within the country, some of it is also pertinent to Sudanese travellers. The attachments include excerpts from the April 1994 and February 1995 issues of the monthly Travel Information Manual, which discusses travel requirements in Sudan and Saudi Arabia.

The attached articles from The Nation and The New York Times provide information on the Islamic Security group, adding to that provided in Response to Information Request SDN19744.E of 13 February 1995.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
