Kyrgyz Authorities Buy Homes From Tajik Citizens On Border

December 03, 2010
BATKEN, Kyrgyzstan -- Kyrgyz authorities in the southern region of Batken have started buying property belonging to Tajik citizens along the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

The head of Aksai village administration, Joldosh Satybaldiev, told RFE/RL that the purchases concern houses situated on territory that Bishkek considers part of Kyrgyzstan.

According to Satybaldiev, the Kyrgyz government has allocated a significant amount of money for the project.

About 40 houses in the village of Tash-Tumshuk along the border were sold to Tajik citizens after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

The Kyrgyz-Tajik border has been a sensitive issue for many years as many parts of the border are disputed and there are small exclaves of territory belonging to Tajikistan within Kyrgyzstan.
