The death of Kihara Waithaka, a parliamentary candidate for Nyeri Town Constituency in the 27 December 2003 general elections [KEN41500.E]

Two references to the death of Kihara Waithaka were found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate (EAS 7 Apr. 2003; Daily Nation 10 Apr. 2003). According to the East African Standard (EAS), Kihara Waithaka, a parliamentary candidate for the Nyeri Town Constituency in the December 2003 general elections (ibid. 8 Aug. 2002), was killed by a lone gunman on 6 April 2003 in Nairobi (EAS 7 Apr. 2003). A family spokesperson stated that two occupants in a car blocked Waithaka's access to his home in Loresho at around 12:35 am, and that one of them shot Waithaka in the chest before driving away.

According to an official at the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi, a funeral announcement indicating that Waithaka was killed by an unknown assailant was published in the 10 April 2003 edition of the Daily Nation.

Waithaka, who was 62 years of age, held a Bachelors degree in economics from Makerere University, in Uganda, and in 1974, gained a Masters degree in economics from the Catholic University of Washington, DC (EAS 8 Aug. 2002). He also obtained a banking diploma at the Barclays Training Centre in London, England, where he became an associate at the Institute of Bankers (ibid.). According to the EAS, this was Waithaka's third run at being elected to parliament (ibid.).
