Update to Response to Information Request IRN15144 of 14 September 1993 on military ID cards, in particular, whether soldiers normally carried ID cards during the Iran-Iraq War [IRN20305.E]

According to a representative of the Iranian Association in Toronto, during the Iran-Iraq War soldiers normally carried ID cards (1 May 1995). The representative adds that, generally speaking, military personnel carry ID cards during their period of service. However, in some remote military garrisons, it is possible that soldiers are issued draft (service) papers instead of ID cards (ibid.).

The DIRB is currently unable to corroborate the above information.

Although they are not directly related to the above subject, the two attached articles, which refer to ID cards of Iranian military personnel in 1979 and 1991, might be useful.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
