In 1 September 2004 correspondence with the Research Directorate, the Consul from the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Ottawa provided the information that follows.
The government of Jordan issues five-year temporary passports to West Bank compatriots, which the latter receive in addition to their valid Palestinian passports. The temporary Jordanian passports are meant to facilitate travel but should not be construed as entitling the holders to Jordanian citizenship. Special stamps are used to differentiate temporary passports from permanent ones. Jordanians may apply to renounce their Jordanian citizenship if they wish. However, Jordanians are allowed to hold foreign citizenship in addition to their Jordanian citizenship.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection.
