Please find attached some documents that
provide information on the Unión Nacional de Estudiantes de
Nicaragua (National Union of Students of Nicaragua, UNEN).
The most detailed information on the UNEN
currently available to the DIRB is provided in the attached section
of Youth Movements of the World. The attached excerpt from
Nicaragua: A Country Guide provides information on student
movements in general, with a brief reference to UNEN.
The available sources name different
presidents of UNEN for the years 1989, 1990 and 1992. A passage in
a 1990 book (not attached) names Jorge Cerrato as the president of
the union (Women and Revolution in Nicaragua 1990, 129).
One of the attached documents refers to the
UNEN in the context of a student strike in July 1992 (Central
America Update 24 July 1992). The strike involved approximately
28,000 students from at least five universities, including the
Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (National University of
Engineering, UNI). Another attachment provides further details on
the strike, although it does not specifically name the UNEN
(Central America Report 21 Aug. 1992, 1-2).
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
