In correspondence received 23 October 2000, a representative of Amnesty International wrote,
According to our information, Daljit Singh Rajput was released in January 1999 following arrest in July 1998. Our information indicates that the High Court found that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the charges against him. However, on appeal by the state, the Supreme Court over-ruled the High Court's decision and he was re-arrested on 17 February 1999. He remained in detention until 7 April 1999 when the High Court once more ruled that there was insufficient evidence against him and ordered his release.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
