ETHIOPIA: Suspects in Oromiya held without charge NAIROBI, 4 July (IRIN) - Residents of Oromiya Regional State have claimed that many suspects were kept in jail for years without charge, the pro-government Walta Information Centre reported on Tuesday. Some of the suspects had reportedly been in detention without charge for up to six years, Walta said. The head of the Oromiya representative's office at the Ministry of Justice said there were 600 suspects currently in jail who had not been charged. The assistant chief prosecutor, Abiy Yebabe, had admitted that most of the 1,200 suspects "to be tried and being tried" under federal law had been in detention since 1999, said Walta. He attributed the delay to failure by police and prosecutors to establish effective cases against the suspects, and bring them to the appropriate court. He also blamed lack of trained manpower and necessary material for the judicial system, according to Walta. To resolve the problem, the ministry had opened branch offices in Arsi, (central Ethiopia), Harer (southeastern Ethiopia), and Jima (southwestern Ethiopia). The ministry also planned to open similar offices in Borena (southern Ethiopia), Ambo (central Ethiopia), Nekemte (northwestern Ethiopia), and Asbe Teferi (southeastern Ethiopia), said Walta. |
