Information on whether there was a Somali embassy in Rome in 1993 and whether it was possible to renew passports at that office [ITA18438.E]

According to information sent to the DIRB by the International Service of Citizenship and Immigration Canada in Hull, up to September 1993 the Somali consulate general in Rome was issuing passports signed by the Consul General Ahmed Sugulle Hersi (16 Aug. 1994). However, the Somali embassy has been issuing passports since September 1993 because the consulate general ran out of these documents (ibid.). For further details, please refer to the attachment. For additional information on this subject, please refer to Responses to Information Requests SOM18549.E of 20 October 1994 and SOM18127.E of 8 August 1994. These documents are currently available at your Regional Documentation Centre.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
