Information on "Operation Yellow Bird," an escape plan for Chinese dissidents possibly organized by a Hong Kong entertainer by the name of John Sham Kiu-fan in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square massacre [CHN9288]
The Toronto Star reports on "Operation Yellow Bird," which
began after the Tiananmen Square massacre (4 June 1991, 1-4). The
source maintains that the operation helped some Chinese dissidents
to leave China for Hong Kong in order to be sent to a third
country, i.e., France (
Ibid., 3, 4). The source adds that
the Chinese authorities have accused John Sham, "an entrepreneur
and former Hong Kong actor," of being the mastermind of the
operation (
Ibid., 2).
According to a representative of the Chinese Community Centre in
Ottawa, "Operation Yellow Bird" was the name of an operation
through which an unspecified number of Chinese dissidents escaped
to Hong Kong in the wake of the Tiananmen Square massacre (19 Aug.
1991). The source did not know whether John Sham Kiu-fan was
directing the operation since the names of those who masterminded
it remained unknown for security reasons.
Further information on the subject is currently unavailable to the
IRBDC.
