Attached please find an excerpt from a
document in which Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani refers to
the availability of leave for prison inmates that allows them to
spend time with their wives and children (BBC Summary 4 Feb. 1993).
However, the report does not indicate whether there may be other
motives for granting leave to prison inmates. Another article
reports that nine imprisoned political opposition figures had been
granted brief furloughs to obtain medical treatment (The New
York Times 22 Nov. 1991).
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
