According to L'information dans le monde, the Bichitra is a general information weekly that was founded in 1972 (1989, 65). In 1989 the Bichitra was published by the National Party, the party in power led by President Hossain Mohammad Ershad, and it had a circulation of 45,000 (Ibid.).

According to an academic expert from Cornell University who visited Bangladesh in January 1993, the editor of Bichitra is Shahdat Choudhury, who is closely affiliated with former President Ershad (22 March 1993).
